Book Review For: "Something Special"

Kincaid crafts a story full of suspense with "Something Special." Part of the Class of '85 Reunion Series, Jane Grey returns to Summerville to recover her uncle's inheritance only to find herself in danger. Enter Andy Morgan. He's a cop who discovers his attraction to Jane is just as strong now as it was all those years ago in high school.
"Something Special is a contemporary romance set next to picturesque Lake Ontario. Summerville is a small, close-knit town. When Jane was young, she witnessed her grandfather kill her mother and grandmother with an axe. The event traumatized Jane and earned her the nickname "Crazy Janie." Andrew Morgan knew better. Andrew saw through Jane's battlements, but it wasn't enough. Jane went on to become a scientist for NASA working on the Mars rover project and Andrew went to work for the Feds.
Jane's uncle has died and left her a small fortune in a safe deposit box. Jane is reluctant to claim the inheritance because of the circumstances revolving around her family's death. She wants no remembrances of her painful past. Andrew is also haunted by his past. He believes in his work and he hates dirty cops. He also believes he might have found one in the chief of police.
When Jane claims her inheritance, she puts herself in danger. Can Andy keep her safe? Will Jane and Andy work through their past hurts and take a chance at love? Do Jane and Andy dare to reach for something special?
Kincaid wraps the reader up in a web of mystery and intrigue as the story opens. The plot moves at a nice clip and Kincaid's writing style is easy to read. The author uses a good economy of words to paint the quaint town of Summerville. I felt like a resident watching the story unfold. Kincaid's dialogue is sharp and witty, bringing a rich authenticity to the characters.
My favorite aspect of the story was the rich characterization. Jane is sad and haunted, yet she's a successful career orientated woman and someone to admire. I just wanted to reach through the pages and give her a hug. Andy is heroic and determined. It was also fun to catch up with the supporting cast who were featured in a previous novella, "Something More."
The story is sophisticated for romance readers and the love scene embodies the smoldering chemistry between the couple. "Something Special" will warm the reader's heart and make them believe that love transcends everything - even the past.
